Galileo Galilei pronunciò la sua abiura davanti ai giudici del “Sant’Officio” che avevano emesso una severa sentenza di condanna in merito alle sue teorie astronomiche.
Vi sono numerose copie della sentenza e dell’abiura (una anche a Firenze, nell’Archivio Arcivescovile).
Con una candela in una mano e i Vangeli nell’altra, Galileo pronunciò la formula dell’abiura riguardo alla “falsa opinione ch’il Sole sia Centro del Mondo, et immobile, e che la terra non sia Centro, e che si muova. Per tanto volend’Io levar dalle menti dell’Eminenze Vostre, e d’ogni fedele Cristiano questa vehemente sospitione contro di me [……] abiuro, malefico, e detesto li suddetti errori, et heresie, et generalmente ogni, et qualunque altro errore heresia e setta contraria alla suddetta Santa Chiesa“.
